What You Need to Know About Under-Eye Fillers

November 2, 2022

Tired eyes can affect anyone, particularly as we grow older. Those bags and hollows under our eyes can make us look exhausted and much older than our actual age. They can also be hard to get rid of, making them a true peril when it comes to skincare.

Too much salt, too little sleep, allergies, genetics - all of these things can result in those dark circles under your eyes. That’s where under-eye fillers come in - this cosmetic procedure can help to alleviate these aesthetic issues more quickly than other treatments. Keep reading for more information on under-eye fillers, and whether or not they’re the right choice for you.

What Are Under-Eye Fillers?

Under-eye fillers are a type of dermal filler injection that can restore facial volume, reduce wrinkles and fine lines, and enhance facial features.

Most dermal fillers contain Hyaluronic Acid, which naturally occurs in the body and helps to facilitate skin hydration, joint lubrication, and tissue repair. There are different brands of fillers, but the most commonly used are Revanesse, Stylage, Teosyal, Restylane, and Juvederm.

Dermal fillers can be used on most areas of your face, including the lips, cheeks, jawline, and neck. Under-eye fillers can be used anywhere around your eyes, such as the tear trough (the line that curves down below the eye), and crows feet.

How Do They Work?

Like most areas of your body, over time the skin around your eyes will begin to sag as the tissue and muscle weaken, and the production of collagen and elastin slows. This leads to wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. As this happens, fat around the eyes can also shift into the lower eyelids, which leads to puffy eyes and worsens eye bags.

Lack of sleep, nicotine consumption, allergies, fluid retention, and genetics can all make under-eye circles and shadows considerably worse.

An under-eye filler uses injectable Hyaluronic Acid to restore volume under the skin. Dark under eyes are often the result of fat or tissue (“bags”) that cast shadows under or around the eye. Filler injections can help to lift the shadowed area, effectively reducing dark circles, and they also help to “fill” wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin around the eyes.

How Much Do They Cost?

Under-eye filler costs vary among clinics and generally cost anywhere between $600 and $2,000. This cost is for one treatment, and it is important to keep in mind that the effects of dermal fillers are temporary. You will need to get them touched up or redone over time if you want to maintain the results.

The longevity of dermal fillers depends on a variety of personal factors such as skin type, metabolism, and lifestyle, but they typically last between 6 and 9 months. Lip fillers can last for as long as 12 to 18 months.

Who is Eligible?

Most people are eligible for fillers, however, they are not recommended for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or suffering from a sinus infection. People who have recently undergone or are about to undergo a dental procedure should also avoid getting fillers, as some procedures can affect how a filler is placed under the skin.

When it comes to under-eye fillers, they aren’t a quick fix for all under-eye problems. They only work for people whose under-eye bags and dark circles are the result of volume loss - not pigmentation. Dermal injections won’t help people whose shadows are caused by increased pigment, and in some cases, fillers can make the problem worse.
