Our Recommended Microneedling Aftercare for Your Best Results
Microneedling helps your skin produce more collagen, which makes it look and feel younger. The process can also help with scars, skin pigmentation issues, large pores, and other conditions. While it is a very safe and effective process, there are certain steps you will want to take the following microneedling to help your skin look its best.
Why Do You Need Aftercare?
Microneedling aftercare is important. Your skin needs to be cared for properly after your treatment to ensure more positive microneedling results and avoid potential side effects.
Microneedling Side Effects
Potential temporary side effects include redness, irritation, skin flaking, and short-term swelling. These should last only a few days. More severe side effects (bruising, bleeding, peeling) are rare. With proper aftercare, you can help reduce the likelihood and severity of any side effects.
Here are a few things that are good to do after microneedling and some things that you will want to avoid.
What to Do After Microneedling
Skincare
Proper skincare will help in many ways. Some of your usual skincare products may irritate your newly rejuvenating skin, so this is an excellent time to switch things up, at least for a while. We’ll help you choose the right products that will give your skin the benefits it needs.
Clean your skin with a gentle cleanser in the days following your treatment. And don’t forget to moisturize. Using a nourishing moisturizer will help your skin look healthy and soft and will help reduce any redness you may experience following microneedling.
Hydrate
Water is vital for everyone. It’s also an essential part of the collagen creation process. Therefore, it’s important for your skin’s healing to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water following your appointment.
Protect with SPF
Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun following your treatment. Try to avoid direct sunlight for prolonged periods for at least a week and wear sunscreen when you go outside, even if it isn’t particularly sunny.
What Not to Do After Microneedling
Exercise
For at least the first 72 hours, avoid strenuous exercise that could cause you to sweat, as this can cause adverse reactions. You’ll also want to avoid swimming pools for that time as well.
Hot tubs, saunas, and tanning beds
The use of saunas and hot tubs can irritate your skin and could potentially lead to an infection. Therefore, it is best to avoid them.
Additionally, your skin will be more sensitive than usual following your treatment, so tanning can easily damage it. For this reason, you should avoid tanning beds after your microneedling procedure.
No retinol or hydroxy acids
Products containing retinol (vitamin A) or hydroxy acid are typically used to exfoliate or cleanse your skin. However, using them in the days following a microneedling treatment can irritate your skin and make the healing process more difficult.
After about a week, you may be able to reincorporate these products into your routine, but you should do so gradually. Talk to a professional and find out what’s best for your situation.
